The foundation year. All-round 90-minute lessons taught by a qualified teacher and planned in detail by our expert team. Lessons cover Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. Other areas of focus include spelling, vocabulary building and arithmetic. In a group environment of no more than 12, children progress individually and as a team as they build confidence in these core subjects.
Reading skills, presentation of work and behaviour for learning are attentively fostered while termly assessments are used to assess progress and provide the children a gentle introduction to timed exams.
During a typical lesson, the previous week’s homework is reviewed and explained, then new work is taught. Lessons are tailor-made to cover all the necessary topics used in a range of 11+ examinations. Class participation is positively encouraged and each child’s input is equally valued. Our teachers love to have the children from Year 4 as they can see the advantage it gives students as they move up to our Year 5 classes.
In the case of absence, the work that has been covered during the lesson will be made available for parents so that children do not fall behind in their programme of work.
Verbal Reasoning (VR) is the ability to comprehend language and words. Skills include recognising relationships between words, identifying letter patterns and working out codes. VR assessments reward pupils who have a high reading ability, a confident range of vocabulary and those who are quick and accurate in spotting patterns with letters. Despite the name, Verbal Reasoning can also test the ability to recognise number patterns and relationships too.
As the language of numbers, Maths at Key Stage 2 level explores arithmetic ability, understanding shape and space, data and probability, and problem-solving using units of measure, money and time. At Hatch End Tuition, we believe maths ability at this age is best developed through teaching of techniques, practice, then the application of these skills in worded problems.
English lies at the heart of children’s development at primary age. A child’s ability to read, understand text and express thoughts through writing has an impact on all areas of learning. Our lessons aim to motivate and inspire in this area as well as develop technical English skills through techniques and personal feedback.
These classes are for children who are currently in Year 4 at school
Our daughter has found Hatch End Tuition extremely helpful and her classes fun to learn. Hatch End Tuition prepares the children so well that the our daughter was well prepared and took the exams in her stride. We have been pleased with Hatch End Tuition and we are now sending our son.
