Year 4 Holiday Courses

The summer holiday between year 4 and year 5 is an ideal time to boost confidence in key subject areas. Our courses in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non Verbal Reasoning allow pupils to go into more depth and revise core techniques to help them hit the ground running in year 5.

Ideal for revising maths areas covered in Year 4. Our aim is to ensure that your child enters Year 5 confident in their understanding of the topics covered in the previous year.

Course topics:

  • Decimal notation, ordering, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by multiples of 10
  • Area and perimeters
  • Averages, mode, median, mean and range
  • Fractions: equivalence, lowest terms
  • Time
  • Direct Proportion
  • Long multiplication and division

This course focuses on the key areas of Verbal Reasoning tested in the GL style 11+ exams. Strategies and techniques are taught and discussed. Children will have a chance to practise these strategies in the lesson.

In this course, which aims to develop the fundamental literacy skills of reading and understanding, the class will read planned material and discuss themes, vocabulary and more. Children will have a chance to practise both standard comprehension questions and multiple-choice style questions and receive feedback on how to improve.

What is Non-Verbal Reasoning?

Non-Verbal Reasoning is the ability to solve problems by interpreting images rather than words. Skills include recognising ways in which shapes and diagrams can be manipulated by changing their size, orientation and pattern.

Which schools test Non-Verbal Reasoning on their entrance exams?

Buckinghamshire County Council schools, Slough Consortium schools, Henrietta Barnett Girls’ school, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’, City of London Boys’, Mill Hill County, St Paul’s Girls’ and St Michael’s Catholic Grammar. This list is a guide only. You should research the schools in which you are interested.

Does my child need Non-Verbal Reasoning lessons?

Once you are sure the schools you are applying for require Non-Verbal Reasoning, we suggest:

  • Practice at home using books and/or online platforms.
  • Booking one of our revision courses during the school holidays.

The course will develop the following skills:

  1. Ideas for writing
  2. Structure
  3. Vocabulary building
  4. Speech and language fluency
  5. Rules of writing; spelling, punctuation and grammar.

This course is designed to revise they key aspects of English work covered in Year 4 and to increase confidence in English skills ready to start Year 5.

It will cover:

  • Comprehension: Reading and understanding; answering questions in fluent and grammatically correct sentences.
  • Technical skills: Spelling, punctuation and grammar.

This course is designed to develop key skills that link Verbal Reasoning and English, including vocabulary building, reading, and critical thinking.

Lessons and activities will cover areas such as vocabulary classification, grammar, spelling, and traditional Verbal Reasoning topics that rely on strong English skills and fluency.
